After weeks of dry conditions. The City of Cochran and Bleckley County are one of 103 counties in a Level One drought response. This means public water utilities, including the City of Cochran, will be required to begin a public information campaign to help citizens better understand drought , its impact on water supplies and the need for water conservation.

Public Works Director, Willie Farrow describes what that means and how you can help conserve water.

"The City is served by four wells that pump from the Upper Floridan Aquifer. Ga. EPD is concerned enough about the recent drought to declare Bleckley County one of 103 Level One counties. This means we are on a drought watch. Basically, customers can use water as normal, but they should use water wisely. 

By conserving water, customers can save a lot of water and reduce their bills. This will help assure Ga. EPD that we are committed to being good stewards of our water supply."

Farrow advises several ways to save water during this drought watch, including:

• Filling up the dishwasher completely before starting it.
• Turning off the water before you shave or brush your teeth.
• When doing your laundry, completely fill-up the washing machine before starting.
• Outdoors, use a hose with a nozzle, and don't over-water.
• Don't water outside between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is recommended by Ga. EPD.
• Mulch your landscape to keep moisture in.

The City encourages everyone to scale back their water usage during the Level 1 drought watch. Hopefully, Ga. EPD will lift the Level 1 for Bleckley County. However, if drought conditions persist, the City of Cochran may have to comply with other water conservation requirements. The City appreciates the cooperation of all water customers during the Level 1 drought watch period.
